Some love stories aren’t about one person.

Sarah has spent her whole life in the same small-but-somehow-big city, collecting questionable decisions, unforgettable nights, and the kind of friends who eventually become family.

She’s got a soundtrack for everything. Heartbreak. Happiness. Bad decisions. Even worse decisions. And, occasionally, the ones that turn out to be exactly right.

Somewhere between crowded concerts, late-night conversations, unexpected love, and the beautiful disaster of growing up, Sarah finds herself falling in love over and over again.

With people. With friendships. With the family she was born into and the one she’s made along the way. With songs that somehow understand her better than she understands herself.

But the funny thing about growing up is that the life you imagined rarely sounds anything like the one you end up living.

Full of heart, humor, heartbreak, and early-2000s nostalgia, The Boy in the Band is a love story about the people, playlists, and moments that make us who we are.

It was never about the boy.

Meet the Characters

Let Me Explain...

What can I say about The Boy in the Band?

It’s a little like a first child in that we grew up together. This wasn’t necessarily the book I planned to write. It was the book I had to write — the one that poured out of me while I was taking my own stab at adulthood and quietly wondering if everyone else had received instructions I somehow missed.

It’s funny and chaotic and sarcastic because, frankly, so was I. But underneath all of that, it’s a love letter: to friendship, to becoming, to the bands I met along the way, to the version of me who was trying her best, and yes — to him.

Who’s him?

Wouldn’t you love to know.
